I use an ICOM f4s radio and a pryme boom mic and ptt. It is leaps and bounds above talk-about radios and many of those rhino gps radios (this is based off of experiences at OK invasion).
I would search for a used ICOM as they can be had for relatively cheap. You want one that is running on UHF frequencies and not VHF as the vast majority of people will be on UHF frequencies. As for the headset and ptt, I bought those new and paid a pretty penny for them, but I can actually hear and talk to people using them in conjunction with the ICOM.
Whatever you do, do not get a crappy throat mic. If you do, I, along with many other members, will kick you in the shins.
